Guide: Ready-To-Eat Cheap Meats in Whitehorse

Its Friday, I've had a terrible week, so I'm going to indulge in my favorite comfort food.

This guide is for everyone out there who wants to buy Hot Rods at gas stops but instead ends up buying Doritos for shame of embarrassment.

This little convenience store has turned into my favorite specialty store over the years. You pay a bit more for it, but you can find most of the good things in the food world here. Their bulk pepperoni also happens to be the best in town. I believe They get it from freybe. Riverside also used to have the best beef jerky in town. I've since found out that the old timer who made the jerky has passed on, and the recipe with him.

Riverside keeps 4 varieties of the pepperoni in stock: Original, Honey Garlic, Double Smoked and Damn Hot. All are good, and are just over a foot in length but the ladder two are tied for my favorite. Both have some kick to it and I usually just alternate, or get both.

Stop #2 - Yukon Meat and Sausage (Google Map) - I know it as the Deli.

Another local gem. I get all my sausage making suplies here - as well as lots of advice. They also have a good sandwich bar, daily specials and a good selection of cheese, sausage, meats and other specialty items that aren't generic enough to hit the big stores.  Today however I'm here for the Spanish Chorizo, Swiss Farmer's Sausage and Landjager (all three also supplied by Freybe's). These, unlike pepperoni which are smoked, are fermented and aged which give them that tangy acidic taste.

While originally going to the Deli for the three sausages mentioned above, the lady at the counter informed me they had some prosciutto in and I couldn't resist. I love the philosophy regarding the simplicity of prosciutto: just hind leg or thigh from pig or wild boar, salt and time - at least 22 months. At this time, its what I crave and cherish the most re: food.

Stop #3 - Stacey's Butcher Block (Google Map)

Good butcher, and like the deli, good place to stock up on sausages, meats, and even some seafood. He also makes good pepperoni (3 feet long!) and is my newly crowned best beef jerkey in town. Its not the traditional gas stop beef jerkey, its more moist and reminiscent of the jerkey I made for this blog, only way way better. I do however wish he would add some heat to it.

There you go everyone, stock up for your next road trip or just eat yourselves sleepy like I did.
Your welcome.
